Science - More about minibeasts

What the lesson is about

The study of minibeasts encompasses a large variety of creatures, and their ready availability in local environments means lessons involving them need never be dull. Practical observations and investigations are essential, but it is important to provide background information and to test the pupils' understanding with resources such as these.

How to use it

A series of activities, uploaded by NGfL Cymru, includes worksheets, a PowerPoint and Smart notebook files on minibeasts. An interactive presentation features a rhyme about minibeasts and asks pupils to match each minibeast to its habitat (MissE).

A resource uploaded by jennysabb asks pupils to think of adjectives to use in sentences about minibeasts, and an interactive game asking children to identify minibeasts is particularly aimed at those with special needs (bevevans22).

A pack of eight minibeast fans includes questions to ask the children (sheep_tea) and a collection of cards can be used for a minibeast lotto game (lbuzzybea).

A resource contributed by Wease shows a garden where pupils can place different minibeasts, and can be used as a prompt for a discussion on habitats, while ilovegiraffes has uploaded a list of resources for a minibeast topic, including fiction and non-fiction books and websites.

The collection also features a series of TESiboard activities, including a listen and read book, a survey where pupils can zoom in on different parts of the habitat and count how many insects they see, and a virtual habitat, where children add minibeasts and watch as they search for a place to live.
