Science - Spatial awareness

13th August 2010 at 01:00

The UK Space Agency has launched a new round of community sponsorship awards, inviting people to submit ideas for projects to increase awareness of the UK's space programme and inspire and educate the next generation of scientists. The total awards fund is pound;35,000, with up to pound;5,000 available for each successful applicant.

Previous projects that secured funding from the Space for All scheme include the recent Space Settlement Design Competition and the OurSpace website and competition.

The winners of the design competition, aimed at 14 to 18-year-olds and run by Imperial College London, have just returned from Houston, where they competed in the international leg of the event.

The OurSpace competition also held its final award ceremony this summer. Hosted at the Farnborough International Airshow and attended by European Space Agency astronaut Jean-Francois Clervoy, it challenged UK pupils to dream up their own digital space adventure.

Prizes included a trip to the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida and Johnson Space Centre in Texas, a visit to the House of Commons, tickets to the National Space Centre at Leicester and World Space Week invitations to the Intech science centre and planetarium, near Winchester.
