Sharing a cigarette

(Photograph) - Sharing a cigarette: Beryl Bainbridge in London, 1986, and WH Auden in New York, 1972, are among 100 duotone portraits by Nancy Crampton in Writers, a stylishly good value collection (Norton pound;25). Three decades of work ranges from the younger selves of Maurice Sendak and Alice Walker to recent studies of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ian McEwan and Annie Proulx. A statement by the writer about their craft accompanies each portrait. Many of the pictures were taken in Crampton's role as the official photographer of the Unterberg Poetry Center at the 92nd Street Y, a famous New York literary venue.
