The Camanachd Association has been awarded National Lottery funding of up to pound;15,000 to develop a Scotland national under-18 shinty squad and it may not be long before schoolgirls break into the youth set-up.

Already there are 10 established women's shinty teams in Scotland but now more girls are starting to take to he game, thanks largely to the work of Team Sport Scotland.

Alan McMillan, programme manager for the new National Youth Group, said:

"There are a few girls taking an active part now and one 16-year-old has been invited to attend the national youth training camp in July. She is just one of 49 players."
