ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHS SERIES. By Dominic Turpin. Longman. Student's book pound;12.99. Teacher's guide pound;69.95.

It can be difficult to find material for lower-ability pupils at key stage 4. Achievement in Maths is a course using only one student's book and a teacher's guide for students aged 14 to 16, working at national curriculum levels 1 to 4 and following Certificate of Educational Achievement or Certificate of Achievement in mathematics.

The student's book uses accessible language and the exercises are simple but appropriate for the age range. The 36 chapters each represent about two weeks' work; the teacher's guide gives thoughtful and supportive notes, including advice on managing student progress and setting appropriate targets and goals.

Photocopiable support worksheets allow teachers to revisit and consolidate number operations with individual students or small groups as appropriate. There are also 20 extension sheets, which lead into national curriculum levels 4 to 6 and could help students make the transition to GCSE work. The test for each chapter could be used for revision as well as assessment purposes. A full set of photocopiable answers is given for the exercises; the author suggests that students be encouraged to mark their own work at the end of each chapter, and consider their progress for themselves.

The course was originally written for the WJEC Certificate of Education, but has been thoroughly cross-referenced against other relevant syllabuses from NEABAQA, CCEA, EdExcel, SEGAQA and MEGOCR.
