Sliding scale

Frances Rafferty's front-page article, "London head set to earn Pounds 62,000" (TES, November 11) states: "The STRB head's pay scale ranges from Pounds 31,743 to Pounds 52,152 depending on the size of school and age of pupils."

This is untrue. The scale starts at Pounds 23,811. This sort of mistake gives an erroneous image of headteacher pay to the public, politicians and school governors. I also believe the majority of headteachers in this country are paid below Pounds 31,743.
