A week in the life of St John's school, Kempston, Bedfordshire

Staff development for everyone is given such importance at St John's school that it has received the "Investors in People" award presented to forward-looking businesses. It shows, for visitors say that it is a fast-moving, positive and friendly school. The special school of 130 caters for pupils with severe learning difficulties, multisensory impairments and autism. Acting deputy headJoanne Hardwick says the school's mission statement is for staff and pupils to achieve together. The facilities include a hydrotherapy pool which is being given a pound;500,000 upgrade, funded by a Big Splash appeal, and which will be opened by the Princess Royal in March. The school shares resources with Barnfield and Bedford further education colleges for ICT and horticulture. It has an active parent-staff association.
