A week in the life of Eldon infant and junior schools, Enfield, north London.

A mass balloon lift-off began a week of centenary celebrations for Eldon infants and junior schools. Each day had its own theme, with more than 1,000 seven to 11-year-olds taking part. Monday saw a special assembly with songs and sketches from each decade of the century. Wednesday was Victorian Day, in celebration of the school's beginnings, with period dress, formal Victorian teaching methods, a strict visiting inspection board, dunce's hats and (mock) corporal punishment. Former pupils, one in her 90s, returned for a tour by Year 6 guides, and classes produced commemorative booklets and received special mugs. "The children loved it. They really rose to the occasion," says deputy head Frances Broadway.
