A red-letter occasion when the Scottish Council of Independent Schools gathered to say farewell to its sterling information officer for the past 17 years, Rose Bell.
Not only has Bell had to deal over the years with the usual inconvenient press questions, both in nature and in timing, she has also been responsible for handling parental queries about places in Scotland. These have ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous and frequent tributes were paid last week to Bell's infinite patience in parrying the parents.
One enquiry she has no difficulty recalling came from a parent south of the border who asked: "Are there any English-speaking schools in Aberdeen?" To anyone who knows that august city, of course, the answer is obvious.
