* One of my Year 1 pupils eagerly told the class: "My great granny is 98." Making use of the situation to practise number skills, I asked: "If she has two more birthdays, she will beI?" "Dead," came back the answer.

* In the corridor I saw a boy wearing trainers instead of ordinary school shoes. I asked him where hi shoes were.

"I've lost one, and I can't find the other," he said.

* I asked my Year 7 pupils to make a list of as many languages as they could. To make sense of the task, some wrote the country and then the language.

Emma wrote: Germany: German France: French England: Normal.
