Southwark College strike over

4th July 1997 at 01:00
The 11-week strike at Southwark College in south London is over after NATFHE lecturers voted 64 to 34 for a return to work. The lecturers failed to stop the management using agency staff and Chris Ryan, sacked after his opposition to restructuring, will not be reinstated.

But Dorothy Jones, the principal, said a framework for the return to work of strikers includes assurances that full quality checks of the agency for part-time staff would be done before a final decision is taken on its introduction. "We will also use our good offices to find Mr Ryan work outside the college," she said.
