Sport Relief - 23-25 March 2012

24th February 2012 at 00:00

The biennial Sport Relief event - a new partner with TES Resources - kicks off on Friday 23 March. With a vast array of resources, ideas for schools and exclusive content on the TES website, the event is about getting your school moving to raise money and change lives. This year's learning issues focus on the lack of access to clean water in Sierra Leone and feeling safe in the UK. HELEN SKELTON'S POLAR CHALLENGE

Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton completed a 500-mile expedition across Antarctica for Sport Relief, arriving at the South Pole on 22 January. She battled snow storms, temperatures as low as -48 degsC and dehydration to make the trip in just 18 days by ski, kite and - in a world first - bicycle. Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes said: "I take my hat off to Helen Skelton. When she first told me that she was going to cycle part of the way to the South Pole, I laughed. But through pure grit and determination she has got there." Use a resource about Skelton's polar challenge to inspire your pupils.

FOLLOW THE CELEBRITIES

The 188 children at St Peter and Paul CofE Primary in Suffolk were so inspired by actor and comedian Eddie Izzard's Marathon Challenge for Sport Relief in 2009 - where he ran 43 marathons over 51 days - that they decided to do their own, collectively covering the equivalent of 25 marathons in a week. Each child ran 3.5 miles to raise a total #163;1,500. Use a film about Izzard's challenge for an assembly.

IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT SPORT

Teach pupils about clean water shortages in many of the regions supported by Sport Relief. See the Sport Relief profile on TES Resources for films and resources to educate children on this critical issue.
