Bog-standard comprehensives are fighting back. David Henderson reports from a landmark conference hosted by North Lanarkshire

* A PE programme that starts in primary 7 and continues into S1 is used St Margaret's High in Airdrie to ease the transition to a bigger school and develop positive attitudes to health and sport. All eight PE staff work with eight feeder primaries, developing games and generic skills.
