Douglas Osler, the inspectorate's chief of chiefs, showed that mandarin gravitas is no barrier to comic timing.

A final session at last Friday's North Lanarkshire conference (page four) brought forth the usual panel question: What was the funniest thing that had happened to panel members in the course of their careers?

Following anodyne responses, Alistair McLachlan, the head of Lornshill Academy in Alloa, said the funniest thing that had happened to him had been the HMI target-setting document landing on his desk.

Osler rejoined: "I can tell Mr McLachlan that the second funniest thing that he will ever experience will be the imminent arrival of notification of a full HMI inspection."
