* The Government has responded to Labour's challenge over standards by announcing a task force to advise on improving performance in primaries and secondaries. It will report to the Secretary of State by September.

Raymond Robertson, the Education Minister, speaking in the Commons on Wednesday, said: "There are schools who may not be getting the best out of their pupils and are therefore letting them down. We should not brand these schools as failing, as some do, or think that they should be closed down or their staff dismissed. We owe it to these schools, teachers, children and parents to help find ways of improving performance."
