What was the best arts company or event to visit your school in the past year? Mick Hesketh, the author of children's books like Bodkin, Keeper of the Marsh and Bodkin in the Big City.

How did you hear about him? Through the Kirkcaldy branch of the Federation of Children's Book Groups.

How long did he spend at the school? He was with us for about an hour and a half in total.

What did he do? He told us how he used his own life experiences to write his stories, how he illustrates them in black and white and then colours them in afterwards, and how he prepares his work for the publishers.

He was a very vivid storyteller and you could see hy the children enjoy his books so much.

Did you do any preparation? Yes, we read the books involved to the children.

Did you do any follow-up work? Oh yes, the children discussed how they might write their own stories, how they could invent their own characters.

What did the visit cost? pound;50 Who paid? The school fund.

What was so good about him? He had the children falling off their seats laughing. They were hanging on his every word.

He made writing books seem so enjoyable - he was quite a dramatist himself, very inspirational.

How relevant was it to the curriculum? Very - it related exactly to the work we were doing with the children on the use of words and ideas and creative writing.
