Star turns;National Youth Orchestra;Arts
What was the best arts company or event to visit your school in the past year? The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.
How did you hear about them? They wrote to us saying we had been one of the schools selected.
How long did they spend with you? A morning.
What did they do? There were four or five young musicians with instruments representing the various sections of the orchestra - strings, woodwind, brass and so on, but not percussion. They explained the range of their individual instruments and interpreted the pieces they were playing. They also explained how the music could create pictorial images.
Did you do any preparation? Not a lot. Just explaining to pupils about the orchestra and how it works.
Did you do any follow-up work? Yes. The children wrote about it and they related it to the instruments they were playing themselves.
What did the visit cost? It was free, because they are sponsored by Shell.
What was so good about the visit? The fact that they were such brilliant young musicians made it easy for the children to relate to them and to see what they could aspire to.
How relevant was it to the curriculum? Totally relevant to music and expressive arts.
