Start making sense

We are gratified to note from the Learning to Succeed report (page 2) that the commission has come up with a number of sensible proposals. It suggests, for example, that FE lecturers should be forced to sign up with the General Teaching Council - and that the council should be able to suspend as well as dismiss teachers from its register.

We note another equally sensible proposal calling into question the relevance of school boards to the majority of parents. Then there are a whole raft of observations on the teaching profession with which the Educational Institute of Scotland is sitting comfortably.

These considered views bear remarkable similarity to those of the GTC and the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, whose cash helped to get the commission going. And the EIS which is behind the broad-based Forum on Scottish Education which is behind the commission is also behind 12 of the report's recommendations to which it has granted "whole-hearted approval."

Thank goodness for consensus.
