Record numbers of teenagers in Wales are taking advantage of a grant to stay on in school or college. By December 25 2009, 37,480 applications for the education maintenance allowance had been received for 2009-10, a rise of 10 per cent compared with the same point in 2008-09. Of those applications, 34,280 were approved, an increase of 21 per cent on the previous year.
