Stepping up

We now have full confirmation, it would seem, of Helen Liddell's continuing presence in Scotland.

The Education Minister's intention - the Prime Minister permitting, of course - to become post-devolutionary Secretary of State appears to have emerged in the unlikely form of her comments on the latest bout of exam table-itis.

Referring to target-setting, she said: "I look forward to commenting in subsequent years on the national progress towards these targets." This cannot mean she wants to continue as Education Minister since she will continue as a Westminster MP.

Let us hope her ambitions do not involve Liddell meddling in matters that do not concern her - for education will, of course, become the responsibility of the education minister in the Scottish parliament.
