Sting in the grant

28th September 2001 at 01:00
The Learning and Skills Councils have issued a press release about a scheme to subsidise the purchase of computers for FE lecturers to aid the move to online learning.

The announcement was about a pound;3 million grant, which would give around 4,000 lecturers up to pound;500 per PC purchased. This amounts to only pound;2m. The LSC has confirmed that the other pound;1m is to cover tax and national insurance costs.

I feel that the Government might have taken advantage of the Inland Revenue scheme to aid employers providing equipment for work at home, or alternatively have found some other way of remitting the charges.

To promote the grant of a sum when 33 per cent of it is being drawn back into tax is tantamount to misrepresentation.
