HAVE you heard the ancient story of a city's leading citizen who fiddled while his city burned? I was reminded of this when I heard Tory Blair castigating secondary schoolteachers.

Pardon me, did I miss something? I thought that results have improved and the percentage of pupils gaining good results increase. So this is failure!

When he returned from a New York jaunt and found his country slowly slipping down the pan he sprang into action and attacked the only group who, under extreme conditions, managed to succeed - the teachers!
