Figures published last year on support staff show that in 2003 the primary sector had 3,387 special needs auxiliary or care assistants; 5,142 classroom assistants; 1,113 other classroom staff such as music or sports instructors; and 4,630 non-classroom staff such as librarians and school office staff.

The secondary sector had 1,244 SEN auxiliary or care assistants; 537 classroom assistants; 444 other classroom staff and 4,672 other non-classroom staff.
