BELATED congratulations to DFEE schools supremo David Normington, on his New Year gong - even if he did have to look up on the Internet to find out exactly what Companion of the Order of Bath actually meant.

David, known to friends as the smiling assassin, lives in Surrey and his local paper the Caterham Advertiser, was quick on the phone when the list came out.

And where was this new member of the order of Bath when the call came through?

In the tub, inevitably. The Diary gathers he managed to restrain himself from making splashing noises during the interview.
