Tap into a rich seam of global resources

8th November 1996 at 00:00
A new series of handbooks from the Development Education Association (DEA) reviews key resources for national curriculum subject areas. They outline both the statutory requirements and opportunities for developing global awareness through the curriculum. The handbooks offer concise guidance as to why and how a global perspective can be integrated into classroom activities.

A review of the first handbook for key stages 1 and 2 in The TES (l0.12. 95) said that the guide demonstrated that the national curriculum Orders furnish ample means for widening the context of primary school learning to include the world. Each booklet in the series includes a comprehensive resource and distributor address list. The Guidances published so far are for KS12, KS3 geography, KS 34 modern languages and KS3 history. Guidelines for Global Issues in Technology is published by Intermediate Technology. All are distributed by the Development Education Dispatch Unit (DEDU).

A regular source of new development education publications is Global Education News, a bi-monthly newsheet published by the Council for Education in World Citizenship (CEWC) which gives details of events and reviews new resources relevant to global education. An annual subscription which includes topic Broadsheets, Digest and Activities Sheets, suitable for classroom use is Pounds 12.

A number of agencies publish mail order catalogues of resources for schools and youth groups. The Development Education Dispatch Unit run by Leeds development education centre distributes the output from a number of small publishers including DECs. Worldaware and Oxfam have catalogues covering the whole range of development education resources from their own education departments and other development agency publishers. The DECs run resource centres where resources can be viewed and in most cases borrowed or bought. The DEA can provide a full list of members including the contact for the nearest DEC.
