Tax-raising party

The Liberal Democrats are due to confirm their pledge to put one pence on the standard rate of tax in order to invest an extra Pounds 2 billion on education at their conference next Wednesday.

The party is also committed to reducing the size of classes and to changing the school inspection system.

It is likely to be the only party entering the election with a promise to raise taxes.
