THE Government's drive on education has led to jobs for 750 more teachers, according to the school census for last September.
More than 789,000 pupils were in school at the beginning of last session, a slight decrease over the previous year, but the number of teachers rose to 51,700.
Some 437,000 pupils were enrolled at primary school, a decrease of 3,500, although the number of primary teachers increased by around 320 - giving a pupil-teacher ratio of 19.4. In addition, primaries had 1,500 non-teaching classroom staff.
Just under 313,000 pupils were in secondary, a fall of 1,600, but the number of teachers was up by more than 200.
