TESS wins 'editor of the year' award at publishing 'Oscars'

The Times Educational Supplement Scotland has achieved notable successes once again in the annual publishing "Oscars".

After only nine months in the editor's chair, Gillian Macdonald was named business and professional magazine editor of the year last week.

At a glittering ceremony held in Edinburgh's Prestonfield House Hotel on St Andrew's Day, the judges of the Scottish magazine awards, organised by the Professional Publishers Association Scotland, declared that Gillian had "a clear, positive and sometimes controversial approach to content, as well as total commitment to changes that have driven up sales and circulation".

TESS saw off competition in this category from The Scottish Farmer, the Law Society publication The Journal and Holyrood magazine. The award was sponsored by Menzies Distribution and presented by Peter Martin, its head of magazines.

Neil Munro, managing editor of TESS, commented: "Gillian has demonstrated, in a remarkably short space of time, the key requirements for an editor - great attention to detail, superb editing ability, an eye for layout and an absolute focus on the interests of the TESS readership."

TESS also made it to the PPA shortlist for best magazine of the year and best cover; Henry Hepburn and Douglas Blane were shortlisted for best feature writer.

Louise Rogers, chief executive of TSL Education, publishers of TESS, said: "This is truly a remarkable achievement and a worthy endorsement of the hard work and exceptional creativity that surrounded the relaunch of TESS back in February this year, when we transformed the title from a newspaper to a full-colour Scottish news magazine."

In the past four years, TESS has won a string of PPA awards, including best magazine, editor of the year and best feature writer.
