We recall from the minutes of last October's meeting of the General Teaching Council that due tribute was paid to John Dobie on his retirement as Edinburgh's acting director of education.

Dobie, GTC convener Mary Rose Caden said, "had always been very supportive".

Can this be the same chap who pens a wide-ranging critique in this week's TES Scotland (Platform, page 18) in which he complains, among other things, about "the alleged independence of the council being compromised by the power battle going on between the teaching unions for control of its committees"?

Perhaps not.
