Headteachers should refrain from splashing out on the holiday home and the plasma TV just yet.

As The TES reported last month, the School Teachers' Review Body has recommended that there be a new national pay scale to cover all work done by school leaders, including those "superheads" overseeing more than one institution. The review body was always expected to draw up those pay scales, and last week Ed Balls, the Children, Schools and Families Secretary, confirmed he would do so.

The Times spoke to the minister, then asked John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, how much the pay could be.

Dr Dunford proposed up to pound;200,000. This suggestion is not totally crazy: one head already earns pound;150,000. But, unfortunately for secondary heads, their pay is not set by their union's leader, and it is far from certain that the Government will be quite so generous.

The suggestion by some newspapers that the extra pay would be targeted at grammar school heads was also a red herring: Mr Balls told The Times he wanted to reward 500 superheads, but only 164 grammar schools remain.
