A less certain note was struck by that well-known friend of Glasgow councillors, Cardinal Thomas Winning whose support has been solicited by, among many others, Kevin Sweeney, principal English teacher at the threatened St Leonard's Secondary in Glasgow.

The school, as every Catholic schoolboy knows, is in Easterhouse. The Cardinal responded in vigorous agreement: "I think it is vital that, in an area deprived as spiritually and financially as East Kilbride, we need to fight for a Catholic presence." Hear, hear.
