The Tinderbox from East Germany (Siegfried Hartmann, 1959), The Snow Queen from the USSR (Gennadi Kazansky 1966) and a rare Little Match Girl from France (Jean Renoir and Jean Tedesco, 1928) can all be seen at London's Barbican Centre in a 200th-anniversary Hans Christian Andersen programme spread over the two weekends of the first London Children's Film Festival (November 9 to 20, www.londonchildren, box office: 0845 120 7531). There's also the UK premiere of The Thief Lord, from Cornelia Funke's novel, on November 17 and 19.
