The six authors who nominated literary works that every child must read in last week's TES left many readers unimpressed.

They were not convinced by AS Byatt's choice of Terry Pratchett's Discworld and Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, nominated by Andrew Motion.

Instead Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird was the unofficial TES Book Club must-read. (
