Touched Wood

7th September 2001 at 01:00
What a difference a few years make - yes, it's the theme of the week. Readers will have noted last week that Education Minister Jack McConnell chose Wester Hailes Education Centre in Edinburgh to extol the virtues of school uniform (now known as "dress code").

Heidie Alex Wood was no doubt the proud bearer of news that Wester Hailes pupils had themselves voted for a uniform.

Can this model of convention be the same Alex Wood who, as a firebrand leader of Edinburgh District Council in a bygone age, would not have given school uniforms house room, no doubt dismissing them as the worst examples of bourgeois decrepitude?
