In Fife the EIS has had a little difficulty at almost the other end of the political spectrum. Don Macgregor, modern languages teacher at Madras College, is standing as an Independent Alliance candidate in North-east Fife for the Scottish parliament. An EIS member, he was miffed when his local association refused to allow him to participate in an all-party education debate.
Macgregor, a disillusioned former Liberal Democrat, tried to make contact with Moray Place officials. He says that after holding the phone "for 24 rings" an administrator refused to let him speak to an official. Back he went to the Fife association and was eventually allowed to take part.
Macgregor's persistence is not surprising. He is a former Olympic marathon athlete, who, as he delivers leaflets in his track suit, is literally running for parliament.
