TRAINEE further education teachers are to receive salaries while they study, the Department for Education and Employment announced this week.
As predicted in FE Focus online (www.tesfefocus.co.uk) two weeks ago, payments for trainee schoolteachers - announced in March - will now be extended to trainee FE lecturers.
The Department for Education and Employment said that the pound;6,000 a year salaries - equivalent to pound;150 a week dring term time - would be trialled from September. They will be available to those studying for a postgraduate certificate in education (FE), currently around 1,100 people in England.
The announcement comes after a meeting between Education Secretary David Blunkett and Paul Mackney, general secretary of lecturers' union NATFHE, who raised concerns that the offer to for teachers could worsen the staffing crisis in FE.
