Two face assault charges

THE former principal of Donaldson's College for the Deaf and a former teacher have been brought to trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court accused of assaulting pupils.

David Scott, 52, and Stuart Harley, 51, deny 14 offences said to have been committed between September 1989 and September 1997. The charges involve 12 pupils aged between nine and 7. Mr Scott faces nine assault charges and Mr Harley faces five charges of indecent assault.

The trial is expected to last two weeks and interpreters will translate into sign language.

The partly residential Edinburgh school is now under new management and has been given a clean bill of health after a chequered recent past.
