Tyne Tees Television Numeracy Project

16th June 2000 at 01:00
Tyne Tees Television and Business in the Community have been working in partnership in the North East on a pilot numeracy project, which aims to support the Government's strategy in Primary schools and for Maths Year 2000.

As part of ITV's 'Year of Promise' a group of 24 Tyne Tees TV staff, were trained to go into primary schools to support children with their numeracy work.

The training, organised by Business in the Community, looked at how the volunteers could help bring maths to children using real life examples, i.e. money, weights and time exampls. The aim was for the volunteers to learn exactly how they could help the pupils to feel more confident in their maths work.

Once trained the staff were allocated to the five schools who had agreed to participate in the project and since January pupils have been benefiting from regular mathematics support.

The success of this pilot scheme has led Tyne Tees to help Business in the Community to recruit more companies to the project and several have already committed.
