UK leads the way

The UK has "pointed the way" for other countries to improve their teachers' status and working conditions, according to a Europe-wide study funded by the European Commission. It found that in many countries there had been a rise in heads' autonomy and teachers' responsibilities. But it also warned that in the UK and other countries these changes had been accompanied by a reduction in teachers' freedoms because of the heightened focus on pupils' results.
