Ups and downs

"So she moved down to Year 1 and is enjoying every minute of it" was the introduction to a TES Talkback article on July 11. Why down?

While educationists persist in describing the early years in such terms, no one, least of all the public, will believe in the professional expertise and calibre needed to teach children from birth to the age of eight.

I have gone up in the world, having originally trained to teach middlesecondary and for the past 10 years taught nursery-aged children.
