Vocational education is not second best
This problem is one we know well ("'Vocational education can give people a life of dignity'", 31 May). Here in the UK we also have to change perceptions of vocational education to stop branding it as secondary to the higher education stream. The way to do this is to raise the profile of high-value apprenticeship routes into the professions. If we look at professional careers in finance, accountancy, engineering and manufacturing, they all offer apprenticeships. And young people embarking on these can potentially earn more over a lifetime than their graduate peers. With international training providers that possess strong brand perception and professionalism moving into India, I believe they can help to make a difference and slowly change views of vocational education.
