AN AMERICAN SLAVE - THE LIFE OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS: Radio 3FM, Sunday, July 23, 5.45pm. A documentary recalling the life of Frederick Douglass, born in 1818 as a slave, who escaped to become one the United States' leading advocates of the abolition of slavery.

THE GREAT COMMANDERS: NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. Channel 4, Sunday, July 23, 7.15pm. A study of the military and political gifts of Napoleon Bonaparte, which brought stunning victories across the battlefields of Europe, often against much larger opposing forces. A general at 24 and ruler of France at 31, his genius for organisational detail is examined.
