Webster effect

Perth College's new campus link site is to be called the Webster Building, we learn. "It's very rare that in education we are able to name a building after someone who is such a distinguished member of the community and a first-class academic," principal designate Mandy Webster was quoted as saying.

We were somewhat taken aback by this display of less than false modesty.

But Perth, quickly noticing the mistake, clarified that the honour was for retiring principal Mike Webster - and not Mandy Exley, his successor.

It's a pity the correction did not quite clear things up. "The name will be a testament to the 14 years of commitment and dedication to both further and higher education provided by Dr Webster, according to principal designate, Mandy Webster Exley." You can't keep a good man down.
