Weir ahead;Jotter

A challenge by Douglas Weir, education supremo at Strathclyde University (Jordanhill branch), was met by the usual disarming mechanism at the General Teaching Council - the promise of a suitably balanced letter from registrar Ivor Sutherland in whom Weir professed to have a great deal of trust. Tony Finn, the GTC's education supremo, referred later to "the person for whom Professor Weir has a great deal of respect".

"Trust," quipped Weir, "not respect."
