Welcome to Write Away

30th September 2005 at 01:00
Welcome to Write Away, the TES Literary Competition, an enjoyable way to meet those targets. The following free resources provide a wealth of material to encourage your pupils to enjoy reading and to develop their own writing skills. And, if they enter the competition, they may win prizes for themselves and their schools as well. Winners' prizes include interactive whiteboards provided by SMART Technologies Inc and digital projectors provided by InFocus Corporation.

This is the ninth annual Write Away competition, organised once again with the help of the National Association for the Teaching of English whose members carry out the first, country-wide phase of judging. One per cent of the thousands of entries will be submitted to a panel of TES and NATE representatives who will choose 20 for publication on the TES website.

Write Away supports the teaching of literacy at key stages 2 and 3 and helps to make writing fun. Each year up to 10,000 children aged seven to 14 send in their accounts of a person, place or incident important to them.

The competition gives children a voice and encourages them to express confidently the complexities, excitements and disappointments of their lives in ways that maintain the interest of the reader.

On the following pages, newly commissioned pieces byJpopular writer Tony Bradman, Michelle Paver, author of Wolf Brother, and award-winner Meg Rosoff join two of the winning entries from last year's Write Away competition.

The 2005 submissions provided the usual pleasurable difficulties for the judges, but eventually 20 boys and girls were invited to enjoy a day at Shakespeare's Globe in London, six over-all winners were published in TES Friday magazine and all 20 on www.tes.co.uk.

Keep up the standards in 2006!
