Where were the Earl's results?

18th December 1998 at 00:00
What happened to the performance table results for Earl Marshal in Sheffield? As its ex-Headteacher I was fully expecting to see its results published so that I could compare the work we had done with others. Earl Marshal was closed last August and subject to a 'fresh start', but does that mean that the people of Sheffield do not have a right to the information or that it is not relevant? The fresh start school has the same population as the old school: is the work that had gone before of no consequence?

As it happens, I am aware that the results this year have improved overall, particularly for those youngsters gaining 5+ A-Gs and for those gaining 1+ GCSE which flew in the face of the national picture. I also know that the school's attendance figures were much-improved. Consequently, Earl Marshal received a 'C' grade from the DFEE and would have been the third Sheffield school to gain a 'tick'. Perhaps this might have caused a spot of embarrassment somewhere? In the face of this 'air-brushing' the staff of the school deserve an accolade for their hard work and dedication: let's hope the publication of this letter is the first step in that direction!
