Your assertion in "A Week in Education" (The TES, January 23) that "we do not assume that all of Britain's bass guitarists will be intellectual heavyweights" is off target.

When a dialogue begins "The drummer thinks ...", the inevitable reply is "What! The drummer thinks?"

Meanwhile, the bass guitarist keeps quiet and continues to write superb, crafted scores, such as those by Paul McCartney.
