Pat Dubas is to head Nottingham's newest school, the Fresh Start successor to Glaisdale comprehensive, which is to close this summer. Mrs Dubas, a former special school headteacher who currently heads the city's schools task force, takes up her post at Easter. She is inviting Glaisdale pupils to name the school which will open in September.

GARETH Williams has been appointed project director of Leigh education action zone near Wigan in Lancashire. Currently deputy director (attainment), he will take charge when Roland Absalom leaves at the end of this month to work for Capita, an educational company. Mr Williams is a former primary head who was for nine years a school inspector i Birkenhead and is a registered inspector with the Office for Standards in Education.

MARK Fenton has been appointed head of Dr Challoner's grammar school, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, from September 2001. Dr Fenton has been deputy head of Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School, Rochester, for the past four years. He succeeds Graham Hill, who is retiring to devote more time to writing.

COLIN Hilton, Liverpool's executive director for education and lifelong learning, is to be one of three key advisers to the Local Government Association, which represents local authorities in the UK. Mr Hilton will attend national meetings and help to formulate national policies.
