Pauline Maddison has been appointed director of education and community learning at Newham council. Ms Maddison is currently a senior education adviser at the Department for Education and Employment where she monitors and advises local authorities on education performance management. She replaces Ian Harrison who is now strategic director for education services at apita.

Leigh education action zone in Greater Manchester has appointed Gareth Williams as project director. Mr Williams, who has been deputy director (attainment) at the action zone for two years, is a registered school inspector and former primary headteacher. He replaces Roland Absalom, now senior education executive for Capita Business Services.
