"Leave school and get an education" is the slogan of World Challenge's "Fill the Gap" programme, which provides three to six-month voluntary work placements for 18 to 25-year-olds. Projects range from teaching in secondary schools and handicapped homes in Nepal, Tanzania and Zanzibar to working on a rainforest conservation project in Ecuador. More than 200 students are selected each year for January and September departures.

Placements cost from Pounds 1,200-Pounds 2,000 and include a one-year open return ticket so students can travel in the country at the end of the placement. Details: Kate Cotton, FTG, World Challenge Expeditions Ltd, Black Arrow House, 2 Chandos Road, London NW10 6NF. Tel: 0181 961 1122.
